Mesh Coils & E-Liquid Capacity in Disposables

A mesh coil is a flat, perforated metal sheet which heats the e-liquid rather than the thin wire that was used in earlier disposables. Since the flat sheet comes into contact with a much greater amount of e-liquid at the same time as compared to a wire, mesh coils became the standard when disposables started to exceed 10,000, 20,000, or even 80,000 rated puffs. A single, non-replaceable wire coil simply isn’t capable of keeping up with that level of volume.

Standard Coils vs. Mesh Coils

A standard (or “regular”) coil consists of a strand of resistance wire (most commonly kanthal, stainless steel, or nichrome) that has been wound tightly in the form of a spiral around the cotton wick. A mesh coil also makes use of the same basic materials, but shapes them into a flat sheet with a grid of small holes punched through it, wrapped around or placed against the wick rather than being made up of coiled wire.

What makes a difference is the surface area. When more of the metal is in contact with the cotton that’s soaked in e-liquid, the heating becomes more even, the temperature rises more quickly with each puff, and, most important for a disposable, the vapourisation remains more consistent as the wick dries out during the life of the device. A standard coil focuses the heat on fewer contact points, and this is one of the reasons why the older generation of disposables tended to have a harsh or burnt taste when the wick could no longer keep the hot spot saturated.

Why Big-Puff Disposables Specifically Need It

A disposable that is rated for 15,000, 20,000, or 50,000 or more puffs must use a single coil to vaporize its entire e-liquid supply during its whole lifespan. There is no possibility of swapping or rebuilding the coil. This coil has to wick and heat steadily from the very first puff right through to the last one, across a total liquid volume a low-puff disposable never has to handle. Mesh’s greater surface area of contact is what makes this feasible: it draws the liquid into the heating area more efficiently than a wire coil can, and this is the main reason mesh has become almost universal since disposables moved into the 10K+ puff range.

What Dual Mesh Actually Adds

What dual mesh means is that there are two layers of mesh material rather than just one, which again doubles the surface area in contact. In practice this means that the coil is able to vaporise more liquid per puff without having to use a high amount of power, and the heat is distributed over two surfaces rather than being focused on one, which is one of the reasons why dual-mesh devices tend to maintain their flavour consistency later into the puff life compared to single-mesh ones. It’s not just marketing: there is a real and verifiable difference in the surface area of the coil, although the practical advantage is most obvious on the devices with the highest capacity, since the coil works hardest and for the longest period of time there.

The Honest Math: mL per 1,000 Puffs

Puff count alone doesn’t tell you how much e-liquid you’re actually getting. The ratio varies more than most people expect across devices we carry:

The variance is more than double between the leanest and the richest device on the list, at puff ratings that are similar or even lower. A device with a lower total puff rating can still provide more actual e-liquid per session than one with a higher rating; the puff number on its own doesn’t show this.
